Voice Teaching/Coaching

I have loved the human voice since my earliest years. My parents were wonderful singers: my dad with a truly stupendous baritone voice, my mother with a beautiful soprano and a talented pianist. They enjoyed singing and often listened to great recordings of Victoria de los Angeles, Jussi Bjoerling, Robert Merrill, Leonard Warren, Lily Pons and many others. When I was eleven I developed a real interest in the voice. My dad, to my great delight told me we had a recording of Enrico Caruso in the house. I was thrilled! It was “La Donna e Mobile” from Verdi’s Rigoletto on a collection called 60 Years of Music That America Loves best.  What a sound! What incredible richness, resonance, power! What high notes! I was hooked! From that time forward I’ve listened to great singers of a large number of styles, learning from all of them. When I was sixteen it was getting apparent that I had some vocal talent and commenced studies with Michael More, a local (and excellent) tenor. From there I completed Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in music studying with Wayne Hough, Masako Toribara, William Diard, Jack Zei, Albert Gammon, and additionally with Bill Reed, Paul Sperry and Richard Cassilly.

In my voice teaching I strive to impart excellent technique into all of my students and then we explore vocal literature according to their interests and goals. We learn the basic anatomy, posture, breathing, balancing the larynx, and tuning the resonators. I have a large number of exercises I have developed from years of teaching which are designed to give as much freedom, resonance, beauty, volume and control as possible. Once we have learned the basics of vocal technique, we move into the study of repertoire which comes from a variety of places, according to the interests of the student. I’m not trying to make opera singers out of all my students!  I am very serious about my students knowing a good, healthy vocal technique which will allow them to sing for years to come. I have taught and coached opera, classical songs, music theatre, jazz, gospel, and contemporary Christian. I am comfortable with and enjoy them all! I should also mention that I have taught students as young as 12 and as advanced as 75. It’s always a good time to begin voice lessons!
